COPPERAS COVE, TX — Under the lights of Bulldawg Stadium on Thursday evening, the Travis Science Academy Mustang soccer team displayed grit and defensive prowess in a combined 7th and 8th-grade match against the Copperas Cove Junior High Bullpups. Despite a late-game surge, the Mustangs narrowly fell to the Bullpups with a final score of 2-1.
First Half: A Defensive Masterclass
The opening half was defined by the spectacular play of Travis goalkeeper Hayden Whitener. Facing a relentless Copperas Cove attack, Whitener anchored the Mustang defense with a series of high-difficulty saves. His "stellar" performance, as noted by the coaching staff, kept the Bullpups off the scoreboard for much of the early going and provided his teammates with the momentum needed to stay competitive in a hostile road environment.
Breaking Through
Offensively, the Mustangs found their spark through the foot of Cesar Martin. In a brilliant individual effort, Martin navigated through the Bullpup defense to net an unassisted goal, giving Travis a crucial momentum boost.
However, Copperas Cove managed to capitalize on two key opportunities, finding the back of the net twice to secure the slim one-goal lead. While the Mustangs pushed for an equalizer in the final minutes, the Bullpups' defense held firm until the final whistle.
Looking Ahead
The Travis Science Academy Mustangs won’t have much time to dwell on the loss as they prepare for another tough road test.
